Blood and sand, the clash of steel, the roar of the crowd. But what was the Colosseum really like? Let’s find out in this week’s instalment of History vs Hollywood!
Thanks for setting the record straight—I had wondered if there was any documented footing behind the “Christians fed to lions” narrative. Hadn’t heard that women would readjust their clothing after being mauled—-sounds very realistic:)
Needless to say it could very well have happened. The Roman’s did have a certain liking of having people killed by Lions and other beasts. The contemporary evidence of it being done to Christians specifically just doesn’t exist though. Perhaps something will be discovered one day. Who knows
Jack, you’ve got a flair for dramatic writing and setting the scene. Once you slay Substack, you should look to screenwriting; it’s just the uno reverse of what you are doing now
This is excellent information written in a manner that draws interest and expectation which is not a disappointment. Much appreciated. This material could easily later be turned into a book.
Hi Zach. Thank you so much. That would be a dream of mine to turn this sort of thing into a book, If I can build up enough of an audience. Glad you enjoyed it!
Jack, this is some in depth material presented in a very interesting manner. You deserve accolades for it. Expect great things from history lovers on Substack

What’s the difference between a pig fighting in an arena and a man who just finished a delicious pork chop?
Ones a gladiator pig and the others glad-he-ate-a pig!
Just wanted to be part of the convo!
Ha. How long you been sitting on that? 😂

Thanks Andrew. Going to give me a rather large head :)
Wish that part about Marcus Aurelius's wife's affair was true. That would be a juicy bit of history. Great article.
Thanks Charlie! Well we can never truly say it didn’t happen.
