The cold winds blow, barbarians stalk the woods and Marcus Aurelius is at the head of his armies in Germania in the first act of Gladiator. But what really happened? Find out in History vs Hollywood!
Honestly I’m not sure either. I read his meditations, and it was fascinating, but I’m not sure I could dive into it whole heartedly. One quite from it I liked: “Thoughts dye the soul”, essentially means that if you think nice thoughts you will have a nice soul and vice versa for negative ones.
Quite an epic post! I am a big fan of Gladiator too. The screenplay is excellent! But Cicero is the Stoic in that movie: “Sometimes I do what I want to. The rest of the time- I do what I have to.”
ugh love this
Thanks so much! Next week we take a look at the Colosseum :)
Bravo! Again history beats out Hollywood for being fascinating and never tidy.
Glad I found you and your ‘stack. Very much looking forward to these installments.
Thanks so much Theresa! Glad to have you on board :)
So interesting!
This is fascinating. You did so much research. Great work.
Thanks Nelly! It was such a fun topic to look into.
That's some truth is stranger than fiction sh&$t! Also I'm not Stoic even though I don't really know what that means
